Disclaimer: I don’t own the characters or world of Yu Yu Hakusho. I’m not making any money off t his please don’t sue me.

Warning: This is based on the Manga ending not the anime one. This is set far into the future and IMO is a refection of the sad possibility the series never addressed. This ties into my other Yu Yu Hakusho one shots and is from the point of view of an Original Character

After the Funeral

She found her dad standing beside the grave marker on what was originally her namesake’s land. She was already just past middle age but her father still looked as he had all her life a young dark haired man that her training allowed to see the power just under the surface. “You know mom would be disappointed that you didn’t show up at the actual funeral?”

“And have everyone staring at me instead of focused on Keiko where their attention should have been,” He said with a snort. “Besides Kid we both know your mom and I said our goodbyes in the Reikai that body back there is just a shell for the people not lucky enough to have access to the afterlife.” She wondered what her neighbors would say if they knew her father talked so casually about visiting the land of the dead.

“Uncle Kuwabara thought you might try to force Koenma to restore mom to life,” she could still remember her favorite uncle’s worried tone as he spoke about her dad laying siege to the after life to demand her mother be allowed to survive her last illness.

“A few decades ago I would have,” he said without missing a beat. “But death is a part of life and while I will out live you, Kuwabara and most of the rest some day I’ll see you all again.” She was surprised he didn’t seem sad. “Besides I’m not ready for the peace and tranquility yet.” She couldn’t help but smile. “By the way I understand your going to be a grand mother soon?”

“Yes,” She said shaking her head. “You know you could come meet them when they are born.” She knew immediately that he wouldn’t. Her father had backed off when her kids were born wearing a magical disguise that made him look older. “Come on now I don’t mind if they learn the truth that I’m not biologically your daughter it doesn’t matter to me.”

“But it matters to me that they don’t judge Keiko for a moment of weakness.” Her father said as he turned and left. “Besides I already know how much it is going to hurt burying you watching over the family line for hundreds of years would be too much for me.” There was the gulf again he had never treated her as if she wasn’t his own daughter but the fact he’d out live her was always between them. “Why don’t we go out to dinner this weekend though just me and you and we can talk about the good memories with your mom?”

“I’d like that,” she said as she watched her father walking away off to return to the Makai where the people he knew weren’t growing old right before his eyes. “See you this weekend dad,” She called and he waved a careless shrug that she knew form her mother he’d always had. She knelt to say her own goodbyes to her mother and then she really should be heading home.

Advice.

“Don’t get up,” she said as she entered the room where her son’s friend was sitting in a small chair looking extremely self conscious. She could only imagine how nervous he must be speaking with her. “I should really thank you for helping my son save me,” she saw him flinch in surprise.

“Ku... Shuichi told you about that?” He asked and she nodded. “It wasn’t anything I really thought about.” He said looking down. “I really shouldn’t be here but Shuichi said I should talk to you and I just need to talk to someone.” He looked down and then said, “Has he told you what’s going on?”

“Some things,” she admitted. “He seemed surprised that you’d finally agreed to ask my advice since it’s been a few weeks since he offered.” She saw him blush slightly. “What bothers you the most the fact your wife cheated on you or the fact she’s pregnant with someone else’s child?” He didn’t answer her which didn’t surprise her. “Or is it something else that’s really bothering you?”

“She didn’t wait,” he said angrily. “I was only away dealing with that makai crisis for a month and she had an affair.” He looked down as if he was ashamed of his outburst. “I’ve been gone way longer than that before and she always waited.” He looked away, “At least I think she’s always waited but now I’m not so sure.”

“Do you really think she’s had other affairs?” She asked and wasn’t surprised when he shook his head no. “I understand what your going through when Shuichi finally told me the truth about himself I was most bothered by the fact he’d felt it necessary to lie to me.” She felt a pang at the memory. “The idea that I had done something that made him think he had to lie bothered me far more than the anger I initially felt at the betrayal.”

“I still have some trouble with it at times,” She admitted to him. “In my weaker moments I wonder about the child that could have been and what may or may not have happened to him.” She could see it shocked him. “But then I remember the child I raised and how he was willing to die for me.”

She could tell he was confused. “I’m not going to tell you not to be angry, because you will be.” She paused briefly to let that sink in. “But if you love her and want her in your life your going to have to learn to forgive her and it won’t be easy.” She saw him frown. “It’s not the best advice but it’s all I have to give.”

He thanked her for the advice and made an excuse to leave. She hoped he’d be okay just as she hoped she’d eventually stop having those moments when she wondered about things.

The end...

Tension

He approached the area Yuusuke was demolishing cautiously. He’d already heard what happened to a few local youki who’d made the mistake of mouthing off to his friend after he arrived in the Makai. Once he finally arrived in the demolished clearing he saw Pu sitting nearby watching Yuusuke stand perfectly still in the center of the clearing. “Who told you Keiko was pregnant?”

“Kuwabara,” he answered calmly. He turned and greeted Pu while tuning out Yuusuke’s rather colorful description of things Kuwabara could do instead of butting into his personal life. “He’s worried about you,” he saw Yuusuke look away. “If you hadn’t come to the Makai he’d be here himself.”

“I just needed to get away from Keiko for a while,” he said anger clear in his voice. “Tell me Kurama, how do I deal with raising someone else’s kid.” He wasn’t surprised to hear the repressed anger and hurt in his friends voice.

“I’m not sure I’m the right person to ask,” he admitted. “I was too ashamed to let my mother know the truth about me until only recently.” He could tell that shocked Yuusuke as he hadn’t let any of his friends know that he’d finally come clean to his human family.

“How did she take it?” It was one of the things he’d always admired about Yuusuke, how he’d always put his own problems aside to help his friends.

“She took it well,” He said letting a bit of his own relief show through. “It turns out she’d figured out I wasn’t completely normal years ago as I just didn’t seem to age and there was the fact I hung around with such unusual people.” He wasn’t surprised when that got a laugh out of his friend.

“However, I think we should go back to talking about your situation.” He saw his friend stiffen. “If you want I’m sure my mother would be glad to speak with you and give you her perspective.” He knew even as he finished saying it that Yuusuke would refuse.

“No thanks,” He said turning back toward the trees. “I’m just going to stay here and work off some more tension before I go back home.” He’d expected it and been prepared for it. He slipped a small seed out of his pocket and hurled it toward his friend. He watched Yuusuke’s shocked face as the seed exploded into a net of tangled vines wrapping around him tightly. “What the hell, Kurama?”

“I’m giving you an opponent,” he stated simply as he felt his body changing and assume it’s Youko form. “It’s a lot more fun when the scenery fights back.” He saw the smile that broke out on Yuusuke’s face as he demolished the vine net. He couldn’t beat his friend in a fair fight but he had no intention of fighting fair and despite his pent up aggression he knew his friend wouldn’t do any permanent harm.

Edit: Graphospasm pointed out a canonical error I made concerning hybrids so I have corrected the fic.

Waiting

It was strange to be so acutely aware of the time passing as she waited for the small plastic test to do its job. She had never expected to be using one of these things after she and Yuusuke had been told by Koenma that children weren’t really possible for them. She had been disappointed but had quickly accepted that if they decided to have children they’d have to adopt even though it would be a long and difficult road.

Of course that was only one of many things she’d had to accept over the years being with Yuusuke. The fact she continued to age like any normal person while he remained unchanged brought them their fair share of strange looks when they went out in public together. She could still remember the shame and embarrassment when one of her student’s parents had tried to get her fired by reporting her for dating one of her students.

Even after fifteen years of youki walking the world freely again there remained people who seemed unwilling to believe that she and her husband were the same age. Which she supposed was a better reaction than the people who reacted with disgust at the idea that she was married to one. There was also the undercurrent where several of her friends and colleagues at work would ask why they hadn’t started a family since her friends had learned Yuusuke was born human.

She had truly grown tired of explaining that Yuusuke had been the result of a powerful and skilled demons actions. Yuusuke didn’t have the time to master that skill and a straight hybrid was impossible as the strength of Yuusuke’s demon blood meant any child of his would be a danger to her if she could even get pregnant. She also hated how she had once over heard them speculating that Yuusuke was only waiting until after she was gone to have kids out of loyalty to her.

“Is it time to check the results yet,” Her husband’s voice said shaking her from her thoughts. She looked over at him standing beside the bathroom door. She turned toward the counter where the test set next to a timer and shook her head no seeing there were still thirty seconds left. “I’m going to the kitchen do you need anything?”

Once more she shook her head no and wondered how he could be taking everything in stride. She was possibly pregnant with another man’s child and he was asking her if she needed a snack. She found herself getting irrational angry at how well he had taken her affair. She knew she should be grateful that her husband was willing to forgive her and had promised her that if she was pregnant that they’d raise the child together but part of her wanted him angry at her. She felt she needed to be punished for giving into the temptation the temporary replacement for one of her fellow teachers offered.

The timer dinged and she found herself shakily picking up the smalls plastic stick. She wasn’t sure how to feel as she saw the indicator telling her that she was going to be a mother. She’d given up on having kids years ago and now this had happened. She turned toward the door as she heard her husband approaching. She could tell that he knew the result and for a brief moment she thought she saw a flash of the anger she’d been expecting since telling him. Of course seconds later it was gone replaced by the supportive look he’d worn so often lately. “Then I guess we are going to be parents,” he said with forced cheerfulness.

She found herself wondering how long could he keep up that forced cheerfulness and if the part of her that wanted him angry at her was going to get its wish before this was over. She would just have to wait and see there wasn’t anything else she could do. She had decided when the possibility of her being pregnant had come up that no matter what she was keeping this child as it was one of her only chances to ever be a mother.

The End.
