Another Visit

He was shaken awake in the middle of the night by Gambit for the second time in three weeks. “Hey Cher, You told Xavier about my last visit,” He said sounding slightly annoyed. “You can tell him tomorrow his new security system still has some major holes in it.” Gambit actually set a sheet of paper down on the night stand. “I made him a list.”

“I take it you have decided on his job offer then,” he said admiring how gold Gambit was to actually make a list of the flaws in Xavier’s security system that had just been upgraded over the previous week.

“What job offer would that be cher,” Remy said flippantly as he settled himself down onto the edge of the bed next to wear he was sitting up. “I just came to see if you wanted to fool around a bit.”

“The job offer from Xavier to do his black ops missions,” he said doing his best to ignore the look Remy was giving him. He noticed Remy relaxing visibly and then got it. “You were checking to see if Xavier erased the information from my head you knew I’d tell him you came.”

“Sure did Cher,” Remy said the flirtation tone gone. “I needed to be sure Xavier wasn’t going to play with your mind if he did then I was getting us both as far away from him as possible.” He was touched that Remy seemed concerned but he worried what he meant by getting him away from Xavier. “But since he didn’t I guess he’s okay to work for so I’ll contact him in the morning.”The leer returned to his face as he leaned forward. “Care to celebrate my joining the side of the angels and using my considerable talents for good?”

“Must you do this again,” He asked annoyed. “We both know you aren’t serious about it.” He said and to his shock Remy got up and walked over to his desk where his sketchbook was. “What are you doing?”

“Making a point,” Remy said walking back over holding his sketchbook. He flipped threw the pages and then handed it to him. “Who have you drawn here?” He asked with an arrogant smirk. He looked down at the picture and saw where he’d sketched Gambit in just a pair of old jeans back at the acolyte hide out. “Your obviously interested and so am I so why not just go for it.”

“I’m not interested in a casual fling, Remy,” He said annoyed that Gambit had gone threw his sketch book without his permission. “Even if you will sleep with a guy I know from your reputation that it would never be more than casual sex.”

“I’m capable of having a relationship, Piotr,” the cajun said annoyed. “It might not be the most practical but if you want some kind of commitment I’m capable of it.” Remy said surprising him and settling back down on the bed. “All you have to do is say the word and the fun an begin.”

“And you’ll be gone when I wake up in the morning,” he said with a snort. He didn’t like to admit it but he had given sleeping with the other man at least once a lot of thought since his last visit. He just wasn’t interested in a one night stand.

“I’ll still be here in the morning,” Remy said leaning forward. “I give you my word,” Remy said leaning closer to him. “Come on Piotr take a chance comrade.” He stared at Remy’s red on black eyes and decided what the hell. The first kiss was much better than the last time since he initiated it and wasn’t surprised by it.

After that things got a great deal more interesting. Remy turned out to be as good a lover as his reputation would suggest. It put aside any doubts about if the cajun had ever been with a man to rest. When he finally fell asleep with the cajun pulled tight against him he wondered if Remy would keep his promise or be gone in the morning.

“Piotr, you need to wake up,” Remy’s voice sounded rousing him from his sleep. “I think we are about to have company,” He said sounding annoyed. “The girl who walks threw walls stuck her head into your room a minute ago and then ran off.”

He cursed quickly in his native Russian before elaborating. “I drew a birthday card for one of her friends for her.” He said shaking his head. “She was supposed to come by this morning and pick it up.”

“You should remember next time if you have an appointment,” Remy said jumping up. “Be sure to give Xavier that list so I’ll have more of a challenge next time.” He watched as Remy threw on his clothes in a hurray. “By the way part of my agreement for working for Xavier is he has to give me a safe house somewhere near Bayville where I can lay low between jobs for him.” He said with a wink. “I suggest you volunteer to show it to me.” Remy then made it to the window just about the time he heard noises outside the door. “See you next time I visit by mon cher,” He said leaping out the window.

He fell back against the pillows and wished he could disappear as Wolverine burst in followed by several other X-men. Of all the ways for the X-men to learn of his orientation being caught in bed with Remy was probably not the worst but it was no where near the best either.

The End.

The Visit

“Hey wake up,” A voice said as someone was shaking him slightly. “I went to a lot of trouble for this visit the least you can do mon ami is wake up.” He opened his eyes to stare up at Remy Lebeau standing beside his bed with a big grin. “Good morning Cher how you been?”

“Remy, what are you doing here,” He asked looking around to make sure he was still in Xavier’s mansion. “The X-men don’t know you’re here do they?” He asked realizing that his former team mate had most likely broken in for some reason.

“Nope they don know,” The Cajun said smiling. “I need your advice and thought I’d drop in when no one was around to interrupt.” He was staring at Gambit in shock as far as he knew Gambit had never asked anyone for advice.

“What kind of advice do you need,” He asked warily. He hoped Gambit wasn’t going to cause him trouble since it had taken Xavier’s considerable political clout to keep him out of jail after his little sister was freed.

“Your new boss offered me a job,” Gambit said pulling out a card and beginning to flip it over his fingers. “I want to know if you think he’s on the level or if he’s another Magneto.” He was thrown by that the fact Xavier would try to recruit Gambit for his X-men had never occurred to him.

“Xavier wants you to be one of his X-men,” He asked unsure how he felt about that. Gambit was the closet thing to a friend he had among the acolytes but that didn’t change the fact he was an admitted thief and con artist.

“No, He wants me to work black ops doing under the table stuff his X-men can’t be involved in,” Gambit said giving him a roguish smile. “I figure you’d be the best judge if he’s setting me up to get grabbed by Shield or not.”

“I don’t know if he’s trustworthy or not,” He said to the other man’s surprise. “I’m here because I have no where else to go aside from prison.” He looked away. “I’d also like to make amends for the damage I did while Magneto had my sister and Xavier’s is a chance to do that.”

“Looks like I’ll have to make my decision on my own then,” Gambit said and then settled down on the edge of the bed. “You want to have some fun before I go?” he asked suggestively continuing the trend of teasing him he’d done all threw out their time as Acolytes.

“I heard about your trip down south with the girl,” He said annoyed. “I’d have thought you’d be done teasing me by now.” He said annoyed. “We both know you aren’t serious about it you’ve got the little black book full of girls phone numbers to prove it.”

“Au contraire, mon ami just because I enjoy the company of beautiful women doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the company of a good looking guy sometimes,” Gambit said leaning in quickly to give him a kiss. “Think about it for next time because I’ll be back to tell you what decision I’ve made.” After that Gambit was up and out of the room.

He climbed out of bed and followed but once he opened the door Gambit was gone. He walked back to the bed and laid back down pulling the pillow over his face. Now he was stuck trying to decide if he should tell Xavier about his late night visitor or not.

This takes place just after The Question.

Stalked

She watched from up in a tree as Wolverine stalked past below her. She hadn't thought he could find her despite Irene's warning that Xavier had sent him to capture her. She had been surprised when Irene called her. She had not expected Xavier to ever start hunting her, in her experience he tended to be more reactive to threats instead of seeking them out.

Of course she knew the reasons Irene had laid them out for her. She was unsure of how to handle the Jean Grey problem as Irene couldn't foresee with one hundred percent accuracy which way she would go. She had to admit the power the girl was reputed to have was terrifying but if she could be controlled and made a weapon she could in the end be used to change the world.

She heard a snict of claws and the branch she was on suddenly disappeared. "What," she said resuming her true form to see Wolverine falling toward her. She twisted and rolled out of the way. "How did you know it was me?"

"I can find you anywhere now Mystique," a voice said in her head. "There is no where you can run." She realized with a sick feeling that Xavier had found a way to bypass her immunity to telepathic scans. She was forced to dodge another attack by Wolverine. She realized he was the main problem and snapped her leg out to hit him in the back of the head. While he was dazed, she took the form of a fox and darted into the underbrush.

"You can talk to me but you can't stop me," She thought at Xavier as she put as much distance as possible between herself and Wolverine. She turned to the left and began aiming for the highway she'd hop onto a truck and get out of there. She was forced to turn back when an optic blast tore up the ground in her path.

"I told you there is no where for you to run Mystique my X-men have you surrounded." Xavier's voice sounded louder. "I cannot stop you yet but soon enough I will be able to." She felt a brush of pain and realized that whatever was making it possible to Xavier to speak to her mentally would soon allow him to use his powers to stop her.

She took the form of a bird and took flight feeling panic and being stalked by someone she couldn't escape. She was then hit by a massive gust of wind that forced her down into a waiting net. She resumed her true form to see the X-men gathering around her. Xavier was sitting by the jet hooked up to a strange variant of Cerebro with the mutant Forge adjusting dials. "So that's how you got into my head Xavier." She looked over at the Native American boy. "I will remember this Forge you will pay for this."

"You won't hurt anyone ever again Raven," Xavier said darkly. "Shield is on it's way and they will be taking you to a cell of my own design that even you can't escape from." She didn't dignify that with a response she would get out sooner or later and then they would all pay.

The End.

The Question

“Thank you for agreeing to see me Ms. Adler,” he said to the blind woman currently sitting across from him. “I have been attempting to contact you for some time to discuss an urgent matter.” He ignored the sense he got from her that she was only humoring him.

“I’m aware of that Professor Xavier.” She said calmly and he was impressed with her focus she was not broadcasting much of anything. “This meeting was inevitable from the moment you decided to ask me the question bothering you.”

He didn’t like the implication of her words. “Inevitable you say surely Mystique could have helped you avoid me?” He asked hoping the answer would be a yes. He’d been doing his best to prevent the future he saw for Jean in Apocalypse’s mind but he did not know if it was possible.

“She could have tried,” Adler said after a moment. “It wouldn’t have done any good you would have kept searching until you found me because you have to know the answer.” She smiled slightly at him. If she wasn’t blind, he’d assume she had seen his face fall at her words. “The answer to your question is yes.” He felt a surge of hope before she continued. “It is possible to change the future sometimes.” She laughed weakly and said, “or at least the future I see.”

“And yet you couldn’t prevent our meeting?” He wanted to hope but her answers needed clarifying. Jean’s strength was increasing at an alarming rate and he worried that soon he might be forced to try to actively shutting down her power to keep it under control.

“Some things are unavoidable no matter what actions I take,” she said after a moment. “Other things will happen because I try to change them.” She gave him a sad look. “That’s not even considering if the vision you saw is mutable or not.” He was about to ask when she elaborated. “It is a bit theological but the question of free will bothers me at times.” She laughed weakly. “I wonder if everything we do is already scripted and my successes at changing the future are only what was meant to happen all along.”

“I do not believe in predestination.” He said trying to sound convinced. The fact that Apocalypse had supposedly seen the future from his time machine disturbed him a little. “I have to believe that our choices matter.”

“Then you never needed to ask me that question,” Adler said with a smile. “You will keep trying to change things regardless of what I say.” Her smile reminded him of Mystique and he was reminded again that this woman was loyal to Mystique above all others. “I hope you succeed though Xavier the girl doesn’t deserve that fate.”

He felt himself freeze at her words. He had never intended to tell this woman who was intimately involved with an enemy who’s future he sought to change. “How did you know?” He finally forced himself to ask.

“I’ve seen the visions for myself sometimes she saves a great many lives, sometimes she destroys them, and sometimes she does both.” The blind woman said in a voice barely above a whisper. “I will not tell Raven unless the dark future becomes the only future.” She looked over at him sadly. “If it comes to that I will not lie to you Raven will kill her to prevent that future.”

“And I will not lie to you Mystique will not survive the attempt.” He found himself saying coldly. He was surprised at his own vehemence. He didn’t approve of killing for any reason but to save Jean from as terrible an enemy as Mystique he would make an exception.

“Then you had better not fail in changing the future,” she said after a moment. “I believe it is time for you to leave.” He could sense her agitation and he wondered if she was aware of how tempting it was for him to erase this conversation from her memory to prevent her telling Mystique anything. “Raven knows we are meeting.” She said confirming that she did know.

“Thank you again for answering my question Ms. Adler.” He used the controls to maneuver his wheelchair toward the door. He could sense that she had nothing else to say to him and he was glad. This evening had changed nothing he had gained the knowledge that it was possible to change the future but perhaps he’d endangered Jean by getting Mystique involved.

He would have to consider his options for dealing with Mystique if she became a threat. He was willing to kill her to save Jean but he’d also do everything in his power to see to it that wasn’t necessary. He had a lot to do once he returned to the mansion.

Notes: Post series. No real pairings other than what is in canon though there is a mention of one sided Wolverine/Jean.

The Burden of Secrets

She left the new guy’s room as soon as possible without appearing to be rude. The rest of the X-men seemed happy with the fact Professor Xavier had managed to keep the former acolyte out of jail and was welcoming him into the X-men with open arms. She had no problem with Piotr joining the school but once again she’d accidently read someone’s mind and found herself stuck knowing their secrets.

The only one who knew that she kept getting accidental peeks into the heads of her fellow X-men was the professor who kept her working hard to prevent them. She didn’t know why in the aftermath of facing Xavier while using Cerebro she was having trouble keeping other people’s thoughts out of her head.

It was getting harder to ignore the things she wished she didn’t know. She couldn’t be alone in the same room with Wolverine anymore since she learned he was attracted to her. She knew he would never act on that attraction but knowing he found her scent arousing was incredibly creepy. There was also the fact she knew Scott wasn’t as indifferent to Rogue’s attraction as he appeared and the fact some part of him might someday return her interest worried her. She didn’t doubt he was interested in her but knowing the others he could be interested in made it hard to have faith in their relationship.

She forced herself not to think about it as she made her way to the professor’s office. She waited until he told her to enter and then rushed inside. “It happened again Professor,” she said as quickly as she could. “I tried to stop it once it began but it just won’t stop.”

“I see,” the professor said calmly. “Tell me Jean whose mind did you read this time?” She was grateful there was no condemnation in his voice the professor never judged her for her lapses.

“I read Piotr’s mind professor.” She watched him nod and was grateful when he didn’t ask for details. She knew what she’d learned about the new student wouldn’t bother the professor but it wasn’t her place to tell anyone else his secrets. “I just don’t understand why I can’t seem to stop it from happening.”

“I believe that your powers are in the middle of advancing once again Jean,” Professor Xavier said after a moment. “I believe the trouble you are experiencing is caused by the fluctuations in your ability.” He had told her all this before. “I know it is difficult to keep being told the same thing but it will take time and discipline to bring your emerging power under control.”

She had never seen into Professor Xavier’s thoughts but at moments like this when he was lecturing her on discipline and control she got a vague sense of dread from him. At times she even thought he was afraid for her but that was ridicules. She would just have to work harder on keeping from seeing folks thoughts and until then she’d just have to keep her mouth shut about what she saw.
