The Elephant in the room

She was extremely nervous sitting in the room with Julie even though it was supposed to be just a study session. “So Gwen what’s got you so freaked out?” Julie asked her after she squeaked when Julie mentioned Ben.

“I’m not freaked out I’m just having trouble with this problem number twelve,” She said quickly and then frowned as she glanced at it and saw it was actually one of the easier ones. She could see Julie’s knowing expression even without looking.

“Come on Gwen, I don’t know what the elephant in the room is but we aren’t getting any work done,” Julie said shaking her head. “Is something going on with Ben since we broke up has he been hurt or is he seeing someone else?” Her flush must have given it away. “All right who is she?” Julie asked. “Gwen, Ben and I broke up so yeah I’ll be a bit sad that he’s moved on but it isn’t like I have any claim on him.”

“Um it is a bit more complicated than him just having a new girlfriend,” She said to the other girl. “Ben’s dating a guy.” She said and saw Julie blink a few times and sit her book down. “Ben really should have been the one to tell you.”

“Yeah but he never would have until it made the news,” Julie said with something between a smile and a grimace. “I’m really surprised I haven’t seen it all over the tabloids.” She hadn’t even thought about how likely that was. “I guess I should get ready for questions from news reporters over our break up.”

“You aren’t going to trash him in the papers are you?” She asked since she still didn’t know how Julie was taking this. “I mean Ben can be an insensitive jerk but he can’t help who he finds attractive.”

“Gwen I don’t care that he’s dating a guy and I won’t trash him in the press I’m insulted you could even ask me that,” Julie said clearly annoyed. “I admit it is a bit strange that Ben is dating a guy but I can deal with it.”

She was glad that Julie could but now she had to prepare for the inevitable explosion once Ben got outed in the national press. She needed to research options and see if it would be better for Ben to come out on his own or not.

Ben 10 Fics master Post

Okay I went on a Ben 10 ficlet writing binge and now I have enough fics that form four distinct verses so I thought it would clear up my master fic list to move all the Ben 10 fics to a single master post.

NOTICE: All My Ben 10 fics/verses are currently Discontinued. I was never very happy with Alien Force and Ultimate Alien but I've lost all interest in writing fic for the franchise for now. If in the future I get inspired again and things change then I might return to add more fics to the verses and finish World of Tomorrow but for now don't expect updates any time soon.

Ultimatum

It had taken her two days to track down Kevin. She knew she could have found him faster if she’d really wanted to but she hadn’t really tried as hard as she could. She had taken quite a bit of time to think about what she’d seen and Sunny’s thread. “I was wondering how long it would take you to find me,” Kevin said from where he was sitting on a rock watching the waves lap at the beach. “I knew you were really pissed about the Ben thing when you didn’t find me immediately.”

“I’m not angry about that,” She said honestly. “I’m a bit surprised that you’re attracted to Ben but it isn’t really that big of a deal.” She had taken time to think about. “There are plenty of people I’m attracted to that I have no plans to ever tell them or anyone else about.”

“I’m not attracted to Ben,” He said looking extremely freaked out. “I’m pretty sure it’s just left over crap from absorbing the Omnitrix and it’ll go away in time.” She could hear the denial in his voice and how much he wanted to believe that. “And if you aren’t pissed why’d you take so long to find me.”

“I didn’t say I wasn’t angry, I just said I’m not angry about that.” She was careful not to bring up what that was. She needed Kevin to listen to her and he wouldn’t if he was in denial mode. “She showed me a lot more than just that in your head such as what you did on Probity’s world with Argit.” She saw his eyes widen in confusion. “Kevin, you were selling weapons to both sides and profiting from her people killing each other over a stupid feud.” When the shock of Kevin being attracted to Ben had worn off the true horror of what he’d done had hit her. “Sunny, was threatening to turn that information over the plumbers and send you back to the null void.”

“Mind probes and scans aren’t admissible in court,” Kevin said quickly. “And those people were so stupid someone was going to make moneys selling them weapons so why not me?” She couldn’t help but glare at him in response.

“I didn’t know mind scans were illegal until I asked grandpa about it,” She said letting her anger really show. “And you should have stopped it because it was the right thing to do, the fact you didn’t and happily joined in with Argit makes me wonder how many other people you’ve hurt through your side deals that Ben and I have been ignoring.” She was still angry. “Argit at least has the excuse of being an amoral little worm but you don’t Kevin you know right from wrong as long as your not hopped up on energy.”

“Like you and Ben have never profited from my deals,” He said darkly. “You never seem to care when a piece of tech I’ve bought or traded for saves our butts.” She knew he was right which just made the entire thing worse.

“Yes, we have and that’s why Ben and I have looked the other way so often but no more Kevin.” She saw him flinch. “I can’t just sit back now that I’ve seen what kind of deals you actually make.” She looked down as she said the last part. “If you want to stay in me and Ben’s lives then you need to stop trying to work both sides of the law.”

“You know what screw you Gwen,” Kevin said getting up and walking away. “I don’t have to put up with this if you don’t want me around then I won’t be around.” She watched him walk to his car and drive off even as part of her wanted to go after him. She was still too angry and hurt to go after him though so she just turned and headed back toward home.

Secret Desires Revealed

“Where am I?” She asked looking around the strangely empty expanse of nothingness. “Hello, is anyone there,” she called as she walked along in the seeming emptiness. She closed her eyes and tried to sense where she was but all she could feel was Kevin all around her. “Kevin are you there?”

“He can’t hear you cousin,” Sunny said surprising her. “I have to admit when I decided to pull this stunt for revenge I had no idea all the interesting things I’d find in his head.” She was staring at Sunny in shock. “Don’t look so shocked you sicced grandma Verdona on me, got me put in parental lock down and kept me from my Antonio.” Sunny smiled darkly. “You ruined my relationship so I’m here to ruin yours.”

“It isn’t my fault that your boyfriend dumped you,” She said angrily guessing that was the real problem. “Tell me what’s going on right now or I’ll call Grandma Verdona again.” She didn’t want to let Sunny know that she couldn’t sense anything beyond Kevin’s mana.

“Kind of hard to do when you’re trapped in your boyfriend’s head with me,” Sunny said cheerfully. “Relax you should thank me you’ll get to know more about your boyfriend than he knows about himself.” She smiled, “I mean the things buried in his head are something you just gotta see.” Sunny looked even more demented as she said, “I mean look here it’s his worst fear.” Sunny walked over to a door that appeared out of no where and opened it. “I think they might actually be an improvement.”

She stared into the door as images of Kevin’s in the monster transformations he’d been trapped in spun around. “Stop this Sunny,” she said quickly. “If this is Kevin’s head we have no right to be here.”

“Oh please, you act like he’s some good guy I’m mistreating.” Sunny pointed to a tv screen that began to show images of Kevin making deals with people. “I can’t believe my parents objected to my sweet Antonio but your parents are all right with you dating a war profiteer.” She found herself staring at images from that planet having that stupid civil war appeared showing Kevin selling weapons to both sides with Argit. “This was going to be my big finish showing it to you and your folks so they’d make you dump him.” She smiled darkly. “Or maybe the Plumbers so he could take another trip to the Null void.”

“When I get my hands on you, Sunny you will regret this,” She said angrily. She wasn’t sure what to make of Sunny’s allegations she wasn’t sure any of this was real but she was going to find out. “So what are you going to do now?”

“I found something better,” Sunny said cheerfully. “I couldn’t believe it when I found it.” She grabbed her and there was a rush of movement and a huge stone pyramid was in front of them. “This is your boyfriend’s most secret desire the thing he tries never to think about.” She pointed at the stone walls. “That Pyramid is grade A denial and you won’t believe what’s inside it.” Sunny blasted the pyramid to shreds and an image began to form inside it. “Take a look , Gwen your boyfriend has a big gay crush on our boring cousin Ben.”

She stared at the image which clearly showed Kevin making out with Ben. “I never would have figured but then again the macho bad boy types sometimes surprise you.” Sunny said laughing at the image. “There are all kind of fantasies buried down there even one or two where you join in with them.”

She glared at Sunny. “You need to stop this, quit making things up to screw with my head and let me wake up.” She might suspect Kevin had thrown in with Argit on war profiteering but Kevin being attracted to Ben was completely unbelievable.

“So you don’t believe me let’s ask Kevin himself,” Sunny said. “But first so you don’t ruin the surprise.” She was suddenly incased in a bubble of Mana. “He won’t be able to see or here you.” She then reached down to the ground and pulled Kevin up out of the darkness. “Hi there Muscles I was just in the neighborhood and decided to rifle through your most personal thoughts and fantasies.”

“What are you talking about?” Kevin asked and Sunny pointed toward the images of him and Ben. “I don’t know what that sick image you made is supposed to be but I don’t think things like that.” Kevin said and she felt like cheering. “Why don’t you just go away Sunny,” He said turning away.

“Well, I guess I’ll have to show Gwen and Ben this then,” Sunny said cheerfully. “And maybe fill the plumbers in about what you sold to buy Gwen’s birthday present.” She watched as Kevin turned back toward Sunny with real fear in his eyes. “After all what’s the penalty for selling one of those to pirates,” she smiled. “Oh yes ten years in the null void, quiet a risk to take for a girl who’d dump you if she found out you wanted into Ben’s pants.” Sunny then grabbed a shining necklace from mid air. “It is a lovely necklace, tell you what Kevin bring that to outside Gwen’s house as soon as you wake up and I won’t tell anyone outside your head about what you want deep down.”

“All right fine but if Ben or Gwen ever find out about any of this,” Kevin threatened and she found herself staring at Kevin in disbelief. She saw Sunny smile and wave her hand and Kevin vanished in a flash of light.

“We don’t have much time Gwen he’s awake now and getting ready to head toward your house, so I’ve got a deal for you,” Sunny said smiling. “When he wakes up so will you, and you might be tempted to call Grandma and tattle on me again.” Sunny glared. “Do that and Kevin will be getting a one way ticket to the null void, but if you just sit back and watch him hand over that necklace to me you’ll never see me again.”

“How can I trust you?” She asked wanting more than anything at this moment to be powerful enough to put Sunny in her place. “How do I know you won’t sell Kevin out the moment you get away with that necklace.”

“Because I won’t need to stupid,” Sunny said with a smile. “I can sell that necklace for enough cash to live on my own and then no one can stop me and Antonio from getting back together.” She couldn’t believe this was all some scheme to get back together with her stupid boyfriend. “So do we have a deal Gwen,” She said darkly.

“We have a deal,” She said darkly .”But if this all turns out to be some trick your playing you’ll be the one running to Verdona for protection.” She meant it she would find Sunny and make her pay for putting her through this.

“You’ll see,” Sunny said laughing and then suddenly she sat up in bed awake. She looked around the room wondering if it was all a dream. She heard a car and froze for a moment but then made herself walk over to the window to stare out. She saw Sunny standing there with a big smile on her face as Kevin walked toward her and shoved the same necklace toward her. “Thank you Kevin, true to my word I won’t tell anyone who wasn’t in your head with us.” She felt sick when she realized what Sunny was going to do but she couldn’t make herself move to stop her. “I should tell you Gwen was there with us so she saw the whole thing.” Sunny then pointed toward her room “See she’s watching us right now.”

Kevin looked up horrified and then turned and ran back toward his car. Seeing how stricken he looked allowed her to over come her stiffness and she threw open the window and jumped out. She ran down blocks of mana but was too late as Kevin’s car sped off. “Why did you do that to him,” she said turning on Sunny angrily. “You didn’t have to let him know I knew.”

“Yes I did,” Sunny said. “I didn’t just come for fancy jewelry I wanted revenge and now I’ve got it.” After saying that Sunny took off into the air vanishing. “Maybe I’ll see you around on Anodyne when you finally stop thinking your too good to be an anodite.”

She watched her go torn between going after her or going after Kevin. “Gwen what are you doing out side in the middle of the night,” Her mother called from the door. She had no idea what had woken her up. “Are you alright?” Her mother asked staring at her.

“No mom, I’m not.” She said honestly not sure how to handle what she’d learned about Kevin. She didn’t know what to make of it. “Sunny paid a visit.” She said and saw her mom gasp. “She wanted to ruin my relationship with Kevin and I think she did.”

“Come inside and we’ll talk,” Her mother said concern clear in her voice. “I’ll have your father contact her parents about this.” She quickly shook her head no and made her mother promise not to tell her dad. “Why not?” She didn’t have a good answer but she had no doubt Sunny would act on her threat to turn Kevin over to the authorities.”

The End.

Not Friends

“What do you want?” He asked annoyed that Ben had interrupted him working on his car. He looked up to see a dangerous look in Ben’s eye. “Is there a point to glaring at me like that?” He wasn’t in the mood to deal with Ben right now.

“Why didn’t you show up to say goodbye to Gwen,” Ben said angrily. “She might not be back for months and you’re here working on your car instead of seeing her off.” He wasn’t about to explain himself to Ben of all people. “She asked me to give you this.”

He took the letter Ben held out and tossed it on his car seat. “You can go now,” He said turning back to work on his car. He didn’t have to worry about his car leaving him to run off and learn magic.

“What’s wrong with you Kevin,” Ben said after a moment. “I’m your friend talk to me.” He laughed at that causing Ben to turn an interesting shade of red. “What’s so funny?” Ben was pissed and he could use this.

“The idea that you and I are friends,” He said enjoying Ben’s flinch. “We hung out cause of Gwen, now that she’s gone don’t expect to see me around anymore.” He could tell Ben was hurt by his statement but it was for the best. “So just get out of here before I kick your ass.”

He saw Ben’s eyes narrow and his hand twitch toward the ultimatrix. “Fine,” Ben said before turning and leaving. He hadn’t expected it to be that easy to get rid of Ben. He realized it wasn’t when Ben stormed back in and grabbed his shoulder. “What the hell is wrong with you is it because it’s my fault Gwen had to go full anodyte?”

That wasn’t true but it would work. “Yes, now go away.” He saw Ben flinch and this time when Ben left he knew it was for good. He felt an unusual pang of guilt but it was for the best. He went back to work on his car determined to do what was best.

Notes: This very short ficlet is the start of a second series of one shots. Not connected to my outingverse. It is set vaguely in the future just after a major and costly battle. This basically serves as the set up piece for the rest of the verse.

Departure:

“Are you sure you have to go,” Ben asked her after she finished saying good bye to her parents and the rest of her family. “Can’t Grandma fix your body so you can stay on Earth?” He was really taking it hard that she’d had to go full Anodite to stop Adwaita’s attack on Earth in revenge for his loss of the Alpha ruin.

“I asked but she says it’s impossible and I have to go with her now or I might lose control of all this power.” She wasn’t completely sure her grandmother was being honest but she could feel how much power she had now. She had to learn to control it no matter what. “She did say I could visit every once in a while once I learn to control it better.” She could feel her grandmother calling to her through the mana field to hurry things along. “I wish Kevin had come.” She knew he was angry, confused and upset about her leaving but she would have liked to say goodbye. “Give this to him for me, please, Ben,” she said handing over the letter.

“I will,” He assured her. She turned back toward her parents and said a final goodbye to them. Once she was done, she focused on Anodyne just like Grandma had told her and she felt herself lifting off.

“Trust me Gwen once you see your new home you’ll forget all about this place,” Verdona said cheerfully. She was too depressed to argue with her grandmother about things. “Now just take my hand and I’ll guide you.”

She reached out and grasped her Grandmother’s hand and the sensation of traveling across the galaxy was like nothing she’d ever experienced before. Maybe this won’t be so bad she thought as they arrived on a planet that sang with mana.

Issues

“We need to talk about your issues with Ben,” She said angrily as she finally cornered her boyfriend. She had finally had to resort to tracking him by his mana to get him alone since he’d been doing everything in his power to avoid her.

“I don’t have any issues with Ben,” Kevin said slightly louder than necessary. “I just have a lot of business to take care of.” She didn’t buy that for a second and even he didn’t look like he bought it. “Look Gwen, I don’t have any issues with Ben just drop it.”

“No, I’m not dropping it,” She said letting her annoyance show. “It sucks that Ben told you that way but you need to stop sulking and go talk to Ben about this.” She searched for something to say. “You don’t want him to think you disapprove do you?”

“I don’t disapprove,” He said shaking his head. “Ben can do whatever he wants but I just don’t see any reason to talk about it.” He looked down for a second and then back up at her. “Besides I’m sick of talking about Ben’s relationship issues.” She was surprised that he was actually starting to glare at her. “For the past two months you’ve been talking way too much about his break up with Julie and now this, I don’t care who your cousin is or isn’t dating and you shouldn’t either.”

She was taken back by how angry he seemed. “He’s my cousin I care about what’s going on his life.” She couldn’t help but add, “And since he’s your friend I thought you would care too?” She didn’t understand why he was being so difficult about this.

He looked for a moment like he was going to deny being Ben’s friend like he usually would but seemed to change his mind. “I am Ben’s friend that’s why I don’t care who he dates it’s entirely up to him your pulling the same crap you pulled during the Eunice thing.” He sounded really annoyed. “Just let him live his life, we don’t all have to talk about every major event in his life since this really doesn’t concern us.” He sat himself down on the curb and looked over at her waiting for a response.

She really didn’t know what to say so she went with the first thing that came to her. “If that’s the case why’d you freak out over the phone and hang up.” She didn’t think she was too concerned with Ben’s life. They’d simply been close ever since they were kids.

“I was surprised and I knew how much you’d want to talk about feelings and crap,” He said actually sounding tired. “Look Gwen can we finish this argument another time I’ve got stuff to do.”

She wanted to keep talking to find out why all of a sudden he seemed so tired of things but she knew it wouldn’t be smart. She knew she could only push Kevin so far before he got defensive and snapped back. “All right,” She said and then, “I’ll see you later I think I’m going to go think for a while.” She wondered how Julie was going to feel once she found out. She knew Julie still had some feelings for Ben that’s why she’d been pushing him so hard to get back together with her. She knew she needed to convince Ben to tell her since it would be better if Julie found out from Ben instead of letting it hit the news.

This is a sequel to An Unexpected outing and is basically the conversation Ben and Gwen have when she arrives at his house.

Conversation

“So I guess I should explain,” Ben said sitting down backwards at his desk chair. He crossed his arms over the back of the chair and gave her his best don’t be mad at me look. She could tell he was forcing himself to act completely at ease.

“Yes you should,” she said a bit harsher than she meant to. She saw him flinch a bit and she felt slightly guilty. She was furious with him for not telling her any of this she told him nearly everything and now he’d kept something like this a secret. “Were you doing this behind Julie’s back?”

“No, why does everyone keep asking that,” Ben said darkly. “Why does everyone seem to think I’d use Julie like that?” She guessed her aunt or uncle must have asked the same thing judging by Ben’s tone. “Julie and I broke up a few weeks before Pierce and I got together.”

“Why were you hiding it then?” She asked the question that really bothered her. “You me and Kevin are together constantly and I tell you pretty much everything.” She had to admit that wasn’t quiet true anymore in the weeks since he’d broken up with Julie Ben had been spending less time with them. “How did you and Pierce even end up together?”

“With you constantly hinting I should work things out with Julie and Kevin asking for more alone time with you,” Ben said shocking her a bit. “I decided to hang around with Grandpa and the plumbers a bit more; see how they’d improved after graduating.” Ben shrugged a bit. “Pierce and I hit it off and since we were both interested we decided to give it a go.”

“That doesn’t explain why you didn’t tell me you were discovering your liked guys,” She said wondering how she hadn’t noticed Ben going through something like that. She had realized long ago that Ben was a terrific actor able to play the part of the annoying brat to perfection but this really surprised her.

“I already knew I liked guys as well as girls but it wasn’t an issue when I was with Julie,” He said shrugging his shoulders again. “I just figured there was no need to bring it up unless things didn’t work out with Julie.” He gave her a weak smile. “Plus I figured it would make things weird with you and Kevin.” His smile got a bit bigger. “I knew you’d be okay about it but insist on talking about it and Kevin would get all wierded out.”

She could see that she supposed but she still wished Ben had told her. “So how did you parents take it?” She wanted to ask him more about why he didn’t tell her but she needed time to figure out how to ask.

“They took it well until after Pierce left and they asked me how far we’d gone,” he said and she felt herself blush at the thought. “I might have gotten a bit out of line when I refused to answer because they’d never asked me about Julie.” He looked down at the floor. “Mom pointed out she’d never caught me and Julie making out on my bed.” He spun around in the chair he was sitting on. “So now I’m grounded for two weeks, so except for emergencies I’m stuck here.”

“How far have you gone?” She asked without thinking and was a bit shocked at the glare she got in response. She was about to dismiss the question but then she saw a familiar smirk replace the glare.

“Tell me how far have you and Kevin gone first,” he said and she quickly objected to telling him that. “Why, if my sex life is going to be open for discussion than so is yours?” She acknowledged his point tried to find another subject.

“When are you going to tell Grandpa Max?” She asked and then when she saw his face. “He already knows doesn’t he?” He nodded. “Did you tell him or did he figure it out like he always does.”

“What do you think?” She guessed that meant he figured it out on his own. That wasn’t surprising if anyone knew Ben better than her it was Grandpa Max and he was around Pierce a lot so he probably caught on quickly. She hated how hard it was to talk to Ben all of a sudden he obviously did too because he blurted out a question, “Will you tell Kevin for me?”

“You can’t be serious Ben,” She said shocked. “This is something you have to tell him not me.” There was no way she was letting Ben stick her with that job. She could tell he was going to ask again so she put her foot down. “No Ben, you tell him.”

“All right,” Ben said and to her shock he pulled out his phone and made a call. She was staring in shock as he held the phone up to his ear and said, “Kevin, this is Ben just letting you know I’m dating Pierce if you have any questions just talk to Gwen about it; I’m grounded.”

“I can’t believe you just did that,” She said in shock. “Why on Earth would you tell him over the phone?” She stopped when Ben just smirked. “You tricked me; you didn’t really do it?” She felt like strangling him as he smiled.

“No, I did it,” He said as her phone began to ring. “I told him just like I told you over the phone it seemed appropriate.” He was smiling again. “Plus this way you have to talk to him about it instead of me.”

She answered the phone and Kevin didn’t even let her get a hello out. “Please tell me Ben was kidding,” Kevin said sounding stressed out. Ben made the situation worse by stating loud enough for Kevin to hear that he wasn’t kidding. “So it’s true then,” She confirmed it still glaring at Ben. “Look Gwen I need to go.”

“He hung up on me,” She said glaring at Ben who began to spin in his chair again. “I can’t believe you did that to me.” She stood up and headed toward the door. “I’m going to find Kevin and make him come talk to you about this.”

“Good luck with that,” Ben said sounding slightly down. “I wish I didn’t have to put you in the middle like this.” He didn’t sound very sincere about that but she resolved to just let it go.

“This isn’t over Ben.” She assured him as she turned and left his room. She would track down Kevin and do what she could to smooth this whole thing over. She couldn’t believe Ben was stupid enough to tell Kevin that way.

The End.

An Unexpected Outing

“Your grandfather knows,” Pierce said causing him to stop and stare at his boyfriend of just three weeks. “Before you ask, no I didn’t tell him but he flat out asked me if we were being careful.” That just made the entire situation worse.

“How did he find out?” He asked himself more than Pierce. “I mean even Gwen and Kevin don’t know yet and it isn’t like I see Grandpa Max every day anymore.” He said and then saw Pierce shaking his head. “Do you have any idea how he found out?”

“Let’s see we’ve been hanging out a lot more, I showed up with a hickey I refused to explain to my little sister and Max called one time while you were over in my room really late.” Pierce said laying it out clearly. “The fact you haven’t moped this time about breaking up with Julie for good probably makes it clear your seeing someone else.”

“I suppose but that doesn’t explain why he’s asking sex things,” He said feeling slightly embarrassed. “He never asked me anything like that about Julie.” He saw Pierce look away. “What is it you aren’t saying?”

“You and Julie weren’t very physical with each other, I mean did you two ever kiss in public at all?” He shook his head no. He wasn’t going to bother explaining that Julie wanted to take things slow and he’d been okay with that. “I just want to know if he’s going to tell your parents.”

“No, Grandpa Max is good about leaving that kind of thing up to me to tell.” He said thinking of the Omnitrix. “I mean he let me go for years lying about the Omnitrix and me dating a human pin cushion has to be in the same ball park.” He smiled at Pierce’s look of annoyance at the pincushion remark. “I suppose though this means I need to tell Gwen or Grandpa might let something slip.” He sighed and then said, “I don’t know how she’s going to take it; she’s still really good friends with Julie and keeps hinting for us to get back together.”

“She’ll take it better than Manny will when I tell him,” Pierce said shaking his head. “He’s a good guy at heart but his first reaction to anything different isn’t pretty.” He recalled some of the run ins he’d had with Manny over the last few years. “Of course he might take it better than Kevin will, especially if he ever figures out you had a crush on him.”

“I never should have told you that,” He said knowing the mention of his one-sided crush on his cousin’s boyfriend was payback for the pin cushion remark. “Besides Kevin might be flattered even as he assures me repeatedly that he’s not into guys.” He saw Pierce smile slightly at that. “Anyway are we just going to sit around my room all day discussion how badly folks are going to react or are we going to go out and do something.”

“I thought we could stay in and do something,” Pierce said suggestively leaning in toward him. He nodded and pulled him into a kiss. They fell back onto the bed and were right in the middle of a great make out session when his bedroom door opened and his mother screamed in shock.

“Uh Mom I can explain,” He said wondering how he hadn’t heard her get home. He wondered if this was all some kind of cosmic joke first he finds out his grandfather knows and then his mom catches him making out while she’s supposed to be out all day with his dad. He saw his mother staring at Pierce who staring stupidly at his mother while still on top of him. “Uh this is Pierce, Pierce my mom.” That got his boyfriend to get up and look embarrassed as he mumbled out a greeting.

“We came back early because your father has a stomach virus,” his mother said surprisingly calm. “Make yourselves presentable and then come down stairs we need to talk.” She turned and left and he glanced over at Pierce who just started laughing.

“This isn’t funny Pierce the only way this could get worse is if Gwen calls with an emergency.” He said and seconds later his phone began to ring. “No way it can’t be,” He reached for his phone as Pierce began to laugh even harder.

“Ben, your mom just texted me not to call for any reason for the next hour.” He was a bit shocked his mom even knew how to text let alone that she’d think he’d run. “And who is laughing in the back ground?” He shot another glare at Pierce who tried to get it under control.

“That’s just Pierce,” He said quickly. “Mom walked in on us doing something she’s not happy about so for the next hour I’m going to get lectured.” He knew any second now Gwen would be asking what they were doing. “Look Gwen I’ll call you later and tell you everything but we need to get downstairs before mom comes back up here.”

After he hung up the phone, he glanced at Pierce who had managed to get his laughter under control. “I think I jinxed us by bringing up Max knowing.” He had to smile at that even as he hurried made sure his shirt wasn’t rumbled too badly and then headed toward the door. “So which do you think freaked them out the most that I’m a guy or that I’m not fully human.”

“I’m not fully human either and neither is my dad remember,” He said as they walked toward the living room. His parents had never said anything he could recall that was homophobic so he was hoping it was just shock and not real disapproval for either reason.

He saw his dad sitting on the couch next to his mom. She looked annoyed and his dad just looked vaguely queasy. He really hoped it was the stomach virus his mom had mentioned. He glanced over at Pierce who had managed to school his face to be perfectly neutral. “How long has this been going on?” His mom asked taking him by surprise.

“We’ve been dating about three weeks,” Pierce said speaking up quickly. He watched his parents exchange glanced and he knew they were doing the math about how he’d broken up with Julie for good two months ago.

“We aren’t mad,” His dad said sounding as sick as he looked. “We just want to understand.” He was glad his dad had said that as he forced himself to sit down. He could tell with a slight glance that Pierce was relieved to hear that as well. “I hate to ask this but you weren’t just using Julie were you?”

He felt slightly insulted but he should have expected that. “No, I wasn’t,” He said quickly. “Julie, and I didn’t work out but I wasn’t using her to hide anything I like both guys and girls.” He hoped that would be the end of it but based on how his mother was looking at Pierce it wasn’t.

“Haven’t I seen you with Max?” His mom said looking at Pierce strangely. “Aren’t you one of the plumber’s fresh out of the academy that he’s supervising?” He set back as Pierce revealed that yes he was and that led to the big bombshell. “Does Max know about this?”

“He figured it out recently,” He said quickly not wanting Pierce to repeat what his grandpa had mentioned. “We haven’t had a chance to talk about it and even Gwen doesn’t know yet.” He could tell that surprised his parents and kept them from asking too many questions. He doubted they’d have the sex talk while Pierce was there but as soon as he left he knew he’d get asked about it. “We aren’t ashamed or anything I just don’t want to make the same mistake as last time.” He could tell even Pierce was surprised by that. “Julie and I didn’t work because stuff just kept happening that she got dragged into without any real say.” After that statement he was glad that his parents seemed to mutually agree to not ask for too many embarrassing details even though his mom did quiz Pierce on his background a great deal.

Later after Pierce had left, he sat on his bed and dialed Gwen. “Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.” He could tell from Gwen’s response that she was a bit put out that he hadn’t called her back just after an hour. “It just took longer than we thought and after Pierce left my parents asked me some really embarrassing personal questions and grounded me.”

“What on Earth were you doing that was so bad Ben?” Gwen asked clearly agitated. “Kevin, thinks that you and Pierce were experimenting with alien drugs.” He found himself completely at a loss for words. “I told him that was crazy but he said that he knew plenty of plumbers who dabbled in them at the academy and wouldn’t tell me how he knew.”

“Nothing like that, Mom, just walked in on us making out,” He said enjoying the shock he knew he’d given her. He didn’t get to surprise her often because she knew him too well. “So I had to do the whole coming out thing to my parents and now you over the phone.”

“I’ll be over there in fifteen minutes,” Gwen said and hung up the phone. He considered calling her back but knew it was probably better to have that conversation in person. He just hoped she didn’t bring Kevin with her he wanted at least one more day before he had to handle that discussion.

The End.

World of Tomorrow
Chapter One

She opened her eyes and looked around the room slightly alarmed until she remembered what had happened. She felt even worse then as she got out of the too large bed and headed toward the door. She needed to find Ben and get some real answers. Opening the door cautiously she peered out and was surprised to find a small stone creature guarding the door. She was slightly alarmed until it ran up to her happily and then away then back clearly telling her to follow it. “All right lead the way.”

She hoped she was doing the right thing following after the creature. She was about to turn back when it led her into a room where her brother was sitting suspended in mid air staring into a glowing orb. “It is good to see you awake.” Ken said without turning. “Come over here, and take a look.”

“What is that?” She asked once she looked down into the sphere. “That looks like me, Ben and Kevin but we’re monkeys.” She looked back at him and saw the ghost of a smile. “Is it some kind of illusion?”

“No it’s another world,” He said shaking his head. “It won’t be viewable long enough for Ben to see it; which is a shame cause I think he’d get a kick out of it.” He said sadly and before she could say anything else the image vanished. “Well that world has moved too far away to see.”

“You mean it was an alternate universe like you see in sci fi movies?” She asked thinking of all the terrible movies Ben had drug her too that featured parallel worlds. “I thought they only existed until Doctor Paradox could fix them?”

“Your thinking of alternate time lines and they are not the same thing at all.” Ken said shaking his head once again. “Plus it isn’t exactly clear what happens to those time lines that get erased by Paradox.” He sounded concerned. “I mean do they cease to exist and everyone who would be born in them just wink out of existence or they still exist but no longer matter to the time line Paradox is watching over.” She frowned as she tried to follow what he was saying. “Maybe I’ll ask him once I finish the spell to free him.”

“Free him?” She asked wondering how someone like Paradox could possibly be trapped but Ken nodded an affirmative. She thought about the other world again and just had to ask. “What’s the difference between a world and a time line then?”

“I knew you’d ask that you always did love to learn,” He said looking a lot more like he used to when she was younger. “Okay, pretend this,” He said drawing a glowing dot in the air, “is the nebula of the Celestial Sapients.” She nodded and he then drew bigger dots around it. “We know it has at least two universes orbiting it maybe more.” She nodded again remember Paradox chiding them for only believing in one universe. “Add in various dimensions like Ledgerdomain and the null void.” He waved his hand causing ribbons of color to appear circling it. “And countless others along with the cluster ball that is time.” She watched as more lines of light than she could count all twisted together swallowing the earlier shapes into a sphere. “And you get what I’m calling a world.” He looked at her smiling slightly.

“It is possible to get from any one place inside the world to another place under the right circumstances.” He then summoned a second glowing sphere next to the first. “Another world is a celestial sapient nebula equivalent surrounded by all the same things that isn’t accessible from ours.” He glanced at her and she nodded her understanding. “Some are very very similar with only slight differences like us all having brown hair, and some don’t resemble our world at all.” He laughed bitterly. “If Hex hadn’t put a giant crack in our world when he shifted Ledgerdomain, I wouldn’t even be able to see them.” Her confusion must have been obvious from his statements. “Ben didn’t tell you everything did he?”

“No, he told me a few things about mom and dad vanishing and Hex stealing my powers but not much else.” He shook his head muttering something under his breath that sounded strange. “He also told me Charmcaster was your wife are you sure she’s dead?”

“Yes, I felt her die,” He said his voice faltering slightly. “Even if I hadn’t I’d know she was dead since Kevin doesn’t take prisoners.” That reminded her again of Kevin and how he’d obviously gone off the bandwagon absorbing energy again. “Look for you to understand what’s going on I have to start with the real nature of folks with Anodite heritage.”

“You mean this has to do with the spark we inherited from grandma that skipped a generation?” She asked and saw him frown. “Don’t tell me you can teleport and do all that stuff that I still have trouble with without being a full Anodite?”

“No, I’m just like you used to be,” He said shaking his head. “But I wouldn’t have been without Hex’s intervention.” He pulled a giant book down from a shelf. “This was written by the guy who inspired the myth of Merlin whose dad was an Anodite.” She stared at the large tome written in a language she couldn’t possibly understand. “You can read that?”

“Not the language but the writing contains mana that translates to anyone reading it.” He shook his head. “If you still had your powers you could read all about how all anodite decedents even those who show no power at birth inherit the potential to become a full anodite but only if they awaken it before puberty on Earth.” She looked at him in surprise. “After puberty it is so deeply buried it’s impossible to do on Earth but a place like Ledgerdomain is a different story.” He then smiled weakly. “So even though I started learning everything I could about magic after that incident with the DN Aliens I would never have become like this on Earth.” She was surprised by that as she hadn’t heard anything about Ken attempting to learn magic. “Ben left out that I was taken at the same time as our parents didn’t he?”

“Yes, he did,” She said feeling a familiar annoyance at her cousin. “We were taken to Ledgerdomain where Hex bombarded all three of us with Mana until the spark manifested in me and Dad.” He looked away. “He didn’t know which side of the family you got it from.” She could tell by his strained voice that it had hurt a lot. “Anyway I don’t know how but Dad somehow seemed to know how to use his new power so he fought Hex and told me to take mom and go.”

“Hex took his power too, didn’t he?” She asked and watched him nod. “That’s where you met Charmcaster wasn’t it, in Ledgerdomain?” He nodded again. “So why did Hex wait two years to take Ben’s parents to Ledgerdomain.”

“He spent that time hunting me and preparing for the biggest spell of them all,” He said shaking his head. “Eventually Charmcaster found and cast a spell on me that made it impossible for him to steal my power while she lived.” He looked away. “He retaliated by using a spell to blind her to her own magic.” She suddenly remembered Charmcaster using a gun on Kevin. “That’s when he went after Ben’s dad because he needed the power of four Anodites to cast his master spell.” He looked away. “He was just biding his time and preparing for the day Grandma finally answered Ben’s request for help.”

“What happened?” She asked wondering how things could have gotten so bad. She could remember how her grandmother had laughed off all their combined efforts without a care in the world. “How did he beat Grandma?”

“Easy he had three times her power and a life time of magical knowledge to call on.” He looked away. “She was too over confident to call in help from other Anodites so she lost and Hex used the power of four Anodites to shift Ledgerdomain changing the nature of reality and twisting Time into a knot that prevents all non predestined time travel effectively trapping Paradox.” She frowned as something occurred to her. “Before you ask, your time travel here was predestined we have to break the knot before you can go back though.” He looked away. “But don’t worry I’ve known how to do that for years you’ll just be here for three weeks.”

“If you’ve known how to break the knot and free Paradox for years why haven’t you?” She asked unable to comprehend why he’d have waited. “I mean is my being here really that necessary to fix things can’t Paradox do it on his own?”

“It isn’t just Paradox that is required to fix things,” He said with a frown. “You have to know the spell to get your powers back when Paradox takes you back to the same moment you vanished.” She watched as he waved his hand a slip of paper appeared. “That first spell will get your powers back in the moment he’s shocked by your disappearance and the second one will blind him to his own magical abilities forever.” She shuddered a bit at the expression his face as he said that, “You’ll need to have both memorized by the time we are ready to break the knot.” She looked back down at the spell and then back at his face. “Any questions?”

The truth of the matter was she had too many questions she didn’t know where to even start. She wasn’t even sure she wanted to know the answer to some of them, but before she could even ask Julie ran in obviously panicked. “Ken, you have to go to Earth now.” She gasped out. “Jimmy’s team is pinned down by Kevin and the teleporter isn’t functioning well enough yet to get them out.” She glanced back to see Ken disappearing in a flash of light a trick she couldn’t manage yet without several minutes prep time and a dozen recited spells. She could help but feel a tiny bit of jealousy mixed in with the latest shock since she arrived. She glanced back at Julie who was watching her with an odd expression. “You better come with me Gwen we can watch from the control room.”

She followed after her as Julie turned and left the room quickly. She wasn’t surprised that Julie had grown into such a beautiful woman but there seemed to be a stiffness there that just didn’t seem like Julie. They made it to a room where a large screen was showing her brother standing in the middle of several omnitrix aliens having trapped a large monstrous amalgamation in a large mana bubble. She watched as he gestured and the bubble shot away into the distance. She got a real shock when the aliens around him disappeared in a flash of green light to reveal older versions of people she knew all wearing what looked like their own omnitrix. “Azmuth made more of the Omnitrix?” She glanced over at Julie who had been joined by Cooper really curious how they had come to be.

“No those are Decatrix,” Cooper said as he fixed her with an unreadable look. “Ben designed them once he could go Greymatter again.” He turned back toward the screen. “They should be teleporting back any second now so we should move the old plumber satellite so Hex doesn’t bring it down.”

“I’ve got it,” Julie said walking to a control panel and holding out her arm. She barely contained a gasp when Julie’s arm elongated turning into a familiar green and black patter as it merged with the console. She glanced over at Cooper but he shook his head clearly telling her not to ask about it.

“Gwen, why don’t you go wake Ben up and tell him what went down,” Cooper said placing his hand on her shoulder. “His room is at the very end of the second right off the main corridor.” She nodded and headed down the corridor ignoring how confused she was by what she’d just seen.

She made it to the door she thought was Ben’s and reached out to hit the alert button next to it. She still couldn’t get Julie’s arm elongating like that out of her head. She got another shock when the door slid open a sleepy looking Piece stood there staring at her. “I must have got the wrong room I was looking for Ben?” She said a bit self conscious seeing Piece standing there in just a pair of pants he’d obviously hastily pulled on.

“This is the right room,” He said stepping back and to the side allowing her to see Ben who had a shirt half way pulled on while trying to get one of his shoes on. “What’s going on?” She was stunned speechless and it took him asking a second time before she could even think to form a response.

“There was some trouble and Ken ahd to rescue a team from Earth,” She said and then still shocked she started saying too much.“Then Julie’s arm merged with machinery and Cooper sent me to tell Ben and I can’t believe no one warned me about this.”

“Pierce can you explain things to Gwen I need to go check on things?” Ben asked as he got up and walked over to Pierce placing a hand on his shoulder. “I know I should do it but...” Pierce just nodded and Ben gave him a quick kiss blowing any doubt they were together away. She’d almost had herself convinced they were room mates and there was another bed somewhere she couldn’t see. “We will talk later Gwen,” Ben said as he pushed past her and raced down the hall.

“Come on in,” Pierce said and she forced herself to walk into the room. “Have a seat over there while I grab a shirt.” She settled herself down in the chair he’d indicated while he walked over the dresser and pulled on a shirt. She still couldn’t believe Ben was gay it didn’t make any sense. She wasn’t prejudiced she wouldn’t care but she couldn’t help but think about how much he’d seemed to be into Julie and Eunice. “Let’s get the big question out of the way first,” Pierce said sitting down in the chair across from her.

“So Ben’s gay?” She knew it was a bit blunt and no where near tactful but she was still thrown by this. She and Ben were incredibly close and she would have thought for sure she’d know something this major about her cousin. The fact he’d kept something like this from her was hard to believe.

“Relax, he wasn’t lying to you,” Pierce said surprising her. “Ben is bi but he didn’t figure that out until a year or two after you went missing.” She couldn’t help but be relieved by that for Julie’s sake she had been hoping Ben and Julie would patch things up. “Any other questions you really want answered because trust me getting Ben to talk about the past is not going to be easy.”

She closed her eyes and thought for a moment. “I have to ask about Kevin and how he went back to absorbing energy?” She saw his face darken and she quickly tried to think up another question. “Or you could tell me about Julie’s arm or those Decatrix things.” She blurted out feeling insecure.

“I’ll answer all three but first the easy one.” Pierce said as he got up and went over to the table near a wall and picked up an armband that looked like the original omnitrix. “This my decatrix and it’s currently charging.” He indicated the power cable plugged in. “Once Ben could go Galvan again he designed them based on the unitrix.” She recalled the device that had become their friend. “Each one can store ten DNA samples downloaded from Primus through the omnitrix.” He set the device down. “They aren’t perfect they can only run for about ten hours maximum and each transformation cuts the time in half.”

“Still they’d even the odds a lot against Hex’s forces,” She said understanding and was actually proud of Ben for realizing he couldn’t do it all himself in this world. He nodded and she saw his face fall again. “What about Julie?”

“That’s not the Julie you know that’s Ship with Julie’s memories and appearance,” He said and she gasped. “A few years ago Julie was fatally wounded by Kevin on a mission and ship tried to save her by trying to assimilate her.” She flinched at the mention of Kevin causing Julie’s death. “It didn’t work but ship’s personality and mind were over written with Julie’s resulting in someone who almost acts like Julie but not quiet.”

“That’s why she seemed so stiff,” she said to herself. She waited ignoring the uncomfortable silence while she waited for him to answer the question bothering her the most. After a while she finally got up the nerve to ask again. “And Kevin?”

“The only person who knows the full story about Kevin’s turn is Ben and he doesn’t talk about it to anyone not even me,” Pierce said. “I do know that shortly after Hex took over he captured them both and when Max led us to the rescue we arrived to see Ben standing over a beaten unconscious Kevin.” She felt herself freeze. “We took them both back to base and Ben refused to talk about it and for a while it seemed Kevin was fine but then he betrayed us.” He looked away. “That’s when we had to flee into the Null zone before that we were holding ground on Earth from Hex’s forces.”

“So no one knows why he betrayed you or why he and Ben fought?” She asked completely unsure. “Why didn’t anyone ever have Cooper drain the alien energy from him again to restore his sanity?”

“He didn’t start absorbing energy until after he betrayed us,” Pierce said shaking his head. “He wasn’t under the effects of absorbing energy when we got him back to base.” She knew she was staring in disbelief but Kevin would never betray them in his right mind. “We know because Max ordered cooper to keep a check on him with a scanner since he was worried Kevin would be tempted by our situation.”

“So no one knows why he did it?” She asked not wanting to believe it. She could tell Pierce didn’t want to talk about it anymore. “Do you think Ben would tell me if I asked?” She hoped he would but this wasn’t really her Ben he was a lot older.

“He never even told Max as far as I know,” Pierce said shaking his head. “He only told your grandfather that Kevin made his choice and was their enemy.” He got up and put a hand on her shoulder. “If I were you I wouldn’t ask him, instead just focus on getting home and changing things.”

She wasn’t sure she could do that and a quick glance at the sadness in Pierce’s eyes made it clear he might not really want her to succeed. She recalled her brother’s comments about the time lines Paradox fixed and froze at the implication that this Ben and all the others would be gone as if they never existed. She wasn’t sure she wanted to live with possibly ending all those lives.

World of Tomorrow
Prologue

She stumbled backwards with her eyes tightly shut. Her head was killing her and she couldn’t remember where she was. The last thing she remembered was getting ready for Kevin to pick her up so they could meet Ben at the movies. “It worked,” A familiar voice said loudly. “Wake up Ken, the spell worked your little sister is here.”

She struggled to open her eyes the voice sounded like Charmcaster but she had been left behind in Ledgerdomain. She felt arms grasping her shoulder as she finally managed to open her eyes. She looked up into a face that looked a lot like her father’s but slightly different. “Gwen, what’s the last thing you remember?” His voice clicked something and she realized he was her brother.

“Ken, we need to go now, he’ll have sensed what you did and someone will be coming.” She focused on the voice and saw through her blurry vision an older Charmcaster. “Can you teleport us back to yet?”

“I can’t take three yet, I’ll need a few minutes.” Her older brother said as he began to pull her along. “We need to find cover until I can transport us back to base.” She really wanted to ask what was going on but she was mainly focused on not falling on her face.

“Can you just take the two of you,” Charmcaster asked as they rounded a corner. She stumbled and didn’t hear Ken’s response. “Look if you can take the two of you back to base do it now.” The older version of Charmcaster said seriously. “I can hide out until you or someone else can come and get me.”

“No,” Ken said darkly. “We stay together I’m getting stronger every second I can take all three of us back after just a few moments more.” Even through her dizziness and confusion hearing the confidence in her big brother’s voice made her feel better.

“Sorry, Ken but we just ran out of time,” Charmcaster said coming to a stop. Ken also stopped and she nearly ran into him. She looked past him and saw an older Kevin walking toward them smiling slightly. She felt a sense of dread for some reason there was something about his face that just didn’t look right. She started to ask but before she could Charmcaster had spun and kissed her brother. She heard a sharp bark of laughter from Kevin that drew her attention back to him. “Go,” Charmcaster said before running toward Kevin whose arm whipped out becoming a long tentacle that she dodged pulling out a gun and firing wildly at him. “Just go Ken, Gwen is the important one get her back to base.”

She felt herself being pulled against her brother and heard him gasp out what was clearly a spell and suddenly they were somewhere else and Ken released her. “Ken, you’re late... Gwen.” A voice she recognized said and she saw Ben looking much like he had that time they’d traveled into the future only he lacked the beard. She thought he was going to run up to her and hug her when suddenly his eyes filled with worry and he looked past her. “Ken,” He yelled and shot forward she turned to see Ken collapsing in Ben’s arms. She watched as he checked Ken’s pulse and then turned toward her. “Where’s Charmcaster?”

“She was fighting Kevin,” She managed to gasp out the worry and fear in his eyes helping her fight threw the confusion. “What is going on Ben?” She asked wondering how and why she was in the future and why she couldn’t remember anything.

Ben ignored her turning quickly. He yelled loudly, “Cooper, is the transporter fixed yet?” She was about to ask again when the older Cooper appeared. She could tell instantly by his face that whatever transporter Ben was referring to wasn’t fixed. She heard a moan and looked Ken was waking up. “Ken, can you pull Charmcaster out or send me to Earth?”

“It’s too late Ben,” Ken said darkly. “My wife is already dead; I felt it.” She realized he was talking about Charmcaster. He turned back toward her. “I need you to tell me what the last thing you remember is?” She was shocked that he was back asking her that again. “Gwen, it is very important you tell me the last thing you remember.”

“It was Friday night I was getting ready for Kevin to pick me up so we could meet Ben at the movies.” She said and saw them frown. “Were you trying to bring me to the future from another time?”

“Gwen, do you still have your powers,” Ben asked and she started to insist that yes she did but his look caused her to check. She hadn’t even noticed because of how bad she felt but her attempts to do anything weren’t working. “I’ll take that horrified look as a no,” Ben said tiredly and looked over at Ken. “She’s from the right time period why doesn’t she remember?”

“I had to pull her through a terribly complex mystical barrier to get her here, but the trauma might account for the short term memory loss.” Ken said tiredly. “Hopefully her memory will come back in time but until then you should fill her in.” He looked incredibly said as he continued. “I need to be alone for a while.”

“All right, Gwen, come with me,” Ben said and motioned for her to follow him. “Cooper, get the transporter working again we need to be able to come and go as needed again.” She walked after him feeling really insecure. She saw Julie working nearby. She waved at her as they walked past and she did her best to return it. She still felt confused and desperately wanted to know what had happened.

“Where are we Ben?” She asked as she looked around at what appeared to a series of caves. She did her best to focus and see if she recognized it but nothing looked familiar. “And what is wrong with Kevin?”

“Nothing is wrong with Kevin he made his choice,” Ben said darkly and she got the impression he wasn’t going to say anything more. “We are in the null void it is large enough to keep us hidden from Hex’s magic.” She didn’t like the sound of that. “Hex rules the world now; he has for the last ten years.”

“How did this happen?” She asked there were so many questions not the least of which was what had happened to her powers. “ She could guess that Kevin worked for Hex now but that didn’t make any sense.

“It all goes back to the night we took you from,” Ben said tiredly. “Kevin was late picking you up and when he got there you and your parents were gone; no sign of any of you.” He said darkly. “It was about two years before we learned anything about what happened.” He looked down. “That was when my parents disappeared just like you and your parents did.” He looked away darkly. “Hex made his move about six months later when Grandma finally answered our request for help.” He looked away. “She was over confident and cocky and it got her killed, but she did free our mothers.” He paused slightly for a moment looking sick. “That was when we learned from your mom that you vanished in a bright flash just before Hex was going to kill you after taking your powers.”

She struggled to remember anything besides the phone call to Ben but she couldn’t. “What about our fathers?” She asked after a moment and Ben’s face told her everything she needed to know except for why. “Why take our parents they don’t have any powers what could Hex have hoped to gain?”

“Look the rest of this can wait,” Ben said after a moment looking away. “You should rest, you look like your going to collapse.” He turned and led her down a different corridor. “You can rest here; it was Manny’s room.” She got the distinct impression by Ben’s face that Manny didn’t need the room anymore and she could guess why.

She looked at his back and really wanted to keep the conversation going but she could tell he was uncomfortable and she was tired. “All right, Ben, I’ll rest but I have to know one thing first how many years has it been since I vanished.”

“You disappeared fifteen years ago,” Ben said tiredly. “Ken and Charmcaster have spent the last ten trying once a year to pull you here with magic.” She watched as he turned and walked by her. “Get some rest, Ken, or I will explain everything later.”

She entered the large room where everything was packed in boxes confirming her earlier guess that Manny was gone. She settled down on the bed expecting to be kept awake by her swirling thoughts but as soon as her head hit the pillow she was out.
